3rd August 2026 – Seniors Marcliffe Cup
40 players took part in the second of this year’s Seniors “board competitions”, the Marcliffe Cup, on a warm, sunny and breezy morning. Many congratulations to the winner, Colin Skeen, with a score of 37 points. The players in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places also scored 37 points(!!), the placing being decided by a card playoff. John Samme was in 2nd place, Jeff Stewart was in 3rd place and last year’s winner Clive Garside was in 4th place.
Well done to all the prize winners!
We were all extremely sad to learn of the recent passing of Cliff Ardern, who founded this very popular competition many years ago in memory of his first wife, Marjorie. Most years, Cliff came up to the clubhouse to do the “rocket start” for the shotgun and then presented the trophy and other prizes after the event. We held a minutes applause in Cliff’s memory. We fully intend to keep running this competition in Cliff’s memory in future years.

1st-2nd August 2026 – Shaw Marsh Trophy
Many congratulations to Lewis Harding who won this year’s Shaw Marsh Trophy after two fine rounds. On Saturday Lewis shot 71 and trailed the Day 1 winner Colin Osborn by 6 shots. However Lewis’s excellent 65 on Sunday meant he finished with 136, 1 shot ahead of Elliot Brownsword on 137. In 3rd place was Mike Richardson on 138, who beat J Marshall (4th) and Nick Standring (5th) on a card playoff. The best gross prize was won by Elliot Brownsword with a total of 141. The best over 22 handicap prize was won by Frederick Evans with a total of 128.

24th July 2026 – Seniors Vets Cup
Many congratulations to Gary Murray, winner of the first of this year’s Seniors “board competitions”, the Vet’s Cup, with a nett score of 70, played under very tough conditions. There was an excellent turnout with 35 seniors playing in this competition.
Andy Rodgers was in 2nd place with 71, Steve Yates was in 3rd place with 72, beating last year’s winner Graham Elliott in 4th place and Matt Gibbons in 5th place on a card playoff. Well done to all the prize winners!

17th July 2026 – Seniors Stableford 6
27 players took part in Seniors Stableford 6, on a warm, mostly sunny morning, with a very light breeze. The fairways were running very fast due to the recent heatwave.
The winner was Dave Rose with 37 points. Steven Wilson was in 2nd place with 36 points, ahead of Stan Spencer, also with 36 points, in 3rd place after a card playoff. Peter Coull finished 4th with 35 points. Well done to all the prize winners.

14th July 2026 – D&C vs Chapel Away
The Millers last D&C match this year was away at Chapel, the Millers going there knowing they needed 5 wins to guarantee making it to the quarter-finals. If Chapel limited New Mills to less than 4 wins they could mathematically qualify, so a tense affair. Unfortunately the Millers could only get the 4 wins out of the 12 matches leaving them one win away from qualifying, which wasn’t down to the Chapel match. The Millers know the 2 points could have been picked up in any of the previous matches.
Well done to Steve Worrall, Paul Taylor, Elliott Brownsword & Lewis Harding for winning on the night. We couldn’t get the treble this year but we have matched the only other team that has achieved a double that was Shrigley Hall in the 80s. All the players enjoyed the new format of home & away and we go again next year.

17th-18th June 2026 – Seniors Trip to Shaw Hill
Another year, another brilliant two days weather! Sixteen of our seniors enjoyed a couple of days golfing and watching England play football on the annual trip to Shaw Hill. The course wasn’t easy and high scoring difficult, however there were many individual highlights.
David Parr enjoyed his two ‘2’s, one on the really tough second hole the highlight. ‘Staffo’ sparkled with a ‘2’ on the 12th and a birdie on his opening hole on the final day, whilst Pat, with all players watching on the final hole, on the last day, came home with a ‘tap in’ birdie.
On Wednesday, Graham Hadfield, Nigel Thorpe, Mike Howard, and Phil Pearson won with 81 points, and in second place with 76 points were Ian Harding, Neil Stafford, Alan Goodall, and Dave Rose.
The winning team on Thursday with 76 points were Keith Wright, Neil Stafford, Chris Hall, and Phil Pearson, and coming second with 73 points, Graham Hadfield, John Downes, Alan Goodall, and Clive Garside.
It’s the last time Clive Garside will be the organiser of the Shaw Hill trip, and everyone expressed their appreciation to him for all the work he’s put in over the years.

18th June 2026 – A First for New Mills Ladies’ Section!
Lady President, Jo Coull, decided to organise something a little different for the Ladies’ Section this year…….. A Ladies’ Day at Ascot!
The ladies all supported her by finding their best clothes & hats & arrived at the clubhouse ready to place their bets! The big screen in the Robert Palmer Suite was the focus for the King’s Parade & four races. Peter Coull was an excellent, well-organised bookie who took the bets & paid out the winners.
After the races, Kirsty served a tasty afternoon tea & Brenda Grimshaw organised a couple of ‘party games’ to complete the fun of the afternoon.
Many thanks go to Jo for organising the event, Peter for supporting her, Brenda for the games and Kirsty & her staff for serving the afternoon tea.

17th June 2026 – Ladies Exchange With Ashton Ladies
On Wednesday 17th June, 12 ladies from New Mills Golf Club, ventured to Ashton Golf Club, braving heavy traffic & traffic jams on the way.
The weather was kind & all enjoyed a 1,2,3 Waltz competition. Some of the holes were challenging, long Par 5’s & tricky Par 3’s but all played well & there were some good scores.
Joyces Hadfield & Bennett & Jo Coull came second & the winners, with 77 points, were Ann Brown, Celia James & Jean Taylor. After the game, Ashton served a tasty two course meal.

Thanks to your generosity and support, the event raised £542 for our chosen charity through the sweepstake, football card, and donations.
In addition, Glenne Milligan’s raffle held at the fashion show raised a further £471 for our charity—an excellent contribution.

7th April 2026 – Seniors Derek Horsey Charity Competition
Congratulations to Dave Farrington, winner of the Seniors Derek Horsey Charity competition with a commendable score of 39pts. Ian Harding was in 2nd place with 37pts, Dave Wagstaff finished 3rd with 35pts and Don Cooper was 4th with 34pts.
Twenty nine seniors took part on a warm, sunny but breezy day. Overall the club raised £150.00 for the charity, including a donation from one of our non-playing seniors.
Dave Farrington and Dave Wagstaff will represent the club in the associated inter-club knockout, and we wish them all the best.

International Hole-In-One for Graham Hadfield!!
Many congratulations to Graham Hadfield, who flew the flag for NMGC by achieving a hole in one whilst on holiday in Spain!! Graham got his hole in one at the 12th hole at Valle del Este Golf Course on 29th January 2026.
We all look forward to Graham putting a bottle of whisky on the bar upon his return to New Mills!! 😁😁

There was an excellent turnout for this year’s Turkey Trot with 36 members of the Seniors section enjoying a typical autumn morning’s golf (fog, drizzle, cloud and sunshine!!)

Unfortunately, due to the fog in the afternoon, the competition was calculated over 9 holes.

Congratulations to Lady Captain (Ann Brown), who won the Mary Cooper Trophy on Finals Day with a nett score of 70. Mo Harrison finished in 2nd place with 74 and in 3rd place was Jackie Piper with 73.

Congratulations to Paul Holland, winner of the Men’s 2025 Rigby Trophy with 43pts. Andrew Thurstan was runner up with 42pts, beating Richard Evans (3rd) on a card playoff. Duncan Moore finished 4th with 41pts and Tony Hall was 5th with 40pts. Russell Evans won the best gross prize with 37pts. Daniel Stuart won the best over 22 handicap prize with 39pts.

5th September 2025 – Seniors Doubles Knockout
Congratulations to John Samme & Stuart Heard who defeated Phil Pearson & Brian Hattersley 2up in the closely fought final of this year’s Seniors Doubles Knockout.
3rd September 2025 – Seniors George Scott Trophy
Many congratulations to Simon Nunn, winner of the George Scott Trophy, with a score of 38pts, beating Lester Cooper (2nd place) on a card playoff. Russell Haynes was in 3rd place with 36pts, beating Duncan Green (4th), Wayne Raby (5th) and Steve Ashworth (6th) on a card playoff.
Thirty five seniors took part in this, the third and final of this year’s Seniors strokeplay “board competitions” and the only Stableford that the Seniors play off the white tees. Well done to the prize winners!
31st August 2025 – Ladies Wilson Bowl
Many congratulations to Lady Captain (Ann Brown) who won the Wilson Bowl with an excellent nett score of 64. Jackie Piper finished in 2nd place with 67 and in 3rd place was Marie-Ann McGibbon with 73.

29th August 2025 – Seniors Aggregate Prize 2025
Many congratulations to Chris Hall, winner of the 2025 Seniors Aggregate Prize, which is based on the best 4 scores from the 8 numbered Seniors Stablefords, with a fantastic total of 161. In 2nd place was Kevin Smith with 158. Jeff Stewart was in 3rd place with 150, ahead of Mike Howard (4th) with 149 and Nigel Thorpe (5th) with 148.

24th August 2025 – Captains v Presidents
The 2025 match between the Gents & Ladies Captains and Presidents teams has been won by the Captains team by 9.5pts to 6.5pts.
The result of the Betterball Stableford is as follows:-

21st August 2025 – The Millers Retain Their D&C League Title!!
Our Derbyshire & Cheshire League team have beaten Reddish Vale 6.5-5.5 at Cavendish Golf Club in the D&C final to retain the Trophy they won last year! The only other team to do the double was Shrigley Hall in the 80’s.
In the final, Baz Lawson led the Millers out and gained a half, Steve Worrall battled through for another half, then Tony Hall recorded the first win to make it all square. Another two losses and the Millers are behind, then James Ignotus pulled one back. Paul Holland romped in with a win! Another loss and the Millers were behind. Elliott Brownsword got it level with one match remaining. “Lucky Brooky” (Mark Brooks) was 2 down with 5 to play, but managed to level his match and then went one up with one hole to play. With nerves playing a big part on the night, he looked calm rolling in a 4ft putt for the match on the 18th green!!! So we won 6.5 to 5.5 – an amazing effort by all in involved!

After a 4 way tie in the Anderton Bowl last month, the playoff was held today. The final standings are:-

2nd-3rd August 2025 – Shaw Marsh Trophy
Many congratulations to Chris Ashton who won this year’s Shaw Marsh Trophy after two fine rounds. On Saturday Chris shot 69 and trailed the Day 1 winner Aran Brooks by 7 shots. However Chris’s excellent 65 on a very wet Sunday meant he finished with 134, 1 shot ahead of Sean Moore. In 3rd place was Stuart Milner on 136, ahead of Steve Yates (4th) on 138, who beat Jon Coverley (5th) on a card playoff. The best gross prize was won by Sean Moore with a total of 149. The best over 22 handicap prize was won by Jon Nuttall with a total of 136.
