Welcome to members and visitors alikeThe New Mills Golf Club is a members club located high in the foothills of the Pennines, near the borders of Derbyshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. Its position on the edge of the Peak District National Park makes it ideal for golfers visiting the area. The location is renowned for its natural beauty and affords panoramic views of the Cheshire Plain and beyond to the Welsh Mountains in the west. Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, provides a dramatic backdrop to the course in the east. The club was established in 1907 and comprises 18 holes, providing a challenging course for all levels of golfer.
Message from the Club Captain, Colin Banks
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to New Mills Golf Club. I have the honour and privilege of being Captain for the 2011 season and I feel that I must share my enthusiasm for the Golf Course here at New Mills. Founded as a Golf Club in 1907, New Mills Golf Club was extended to eighteen holes in 2001, opening fully in early 2002. The panoramic views afforded by the spectacular golf course architecture means that the golfer is rewarded at every turn by a new and exciting vista. On the 15th tee the keen sighted can peer across the Cheshire plain into the hills of North Wales and across the expanse of Manchester way north of Bolton. Conversely from the approach to the 3rd green it feels as if a chip with an eight iron will find the plateau summit of Kinder Scout. Truly magnificent in its aspect the course has its golfing challenges as well. I feel the signature hole is the “Quarry” 12th hole with its fearsome rock wall to surmount, always more of a psychological barrier than a physical one. The tremendous 16th hole with 230yards to carry but a big downhill drop of nearly 300ft requires expert judgement and can require a short iron or large wood depending on the wind direction. The greens are second to none in the region and run true all summer long. The Club, of course, is not just the hardware of the golf course, and I have personally have benefitted from the true friendship of the Membership here at New Mills. I believe that this is the secret to the congenial spirit within the Club and is the key to the happiness of all at New Mills. Any visitor will receive a genuine welcome on the Course from the members and in the Club House from the new Steward and Stewardess, John and Liz, whose culinary skills are already proving a hit with the visitors and members alike. I hope to spend my year in office as an ambassador for the club, alongside Lady Captain, Marion Harrison, encouraging new members, and I am especially keen that young people become more involved in the Club, following the example of our excellent Junior Captain Jack Marshall. I am hoping we can build on our popular open events and stage a successful June Quad Am competition to rival the always full September Quad Am. Member or Visitor, I look forward to seeing you all on the fairways or in the Clubhouse at New Mills Golf Club.
Message from the Club Lady Captain, Marion Harrison
Hello, I’m Marion Harrison and I am Lady Captain of New Mills Golf Club for 2011. Due to work and family commitments, as well as playing crown green bowls and being a member of two art groups I didn’t take up playing golf until quite late in life. As my daughter and family and my son and his wife live in New Mills, I was always aware of how beautiful the location of the course was. I finally took the plunge and joined the club in 1999 when it was still a nine hole course. Starting to play golf wasn’t easy, due largely to work commitments and at first I tended to play on my own. On more than one occasion my ‘swing’ led to me losing balance in a rather unlikely lady-like manner! I recall one of my first games with a more experienced lady member. It was a beautiful day and I was spellbound admiring the stunning views when my partner said to me “Get on with the game ! We’re not here to look at the scenery!”. I’m glad to say we’re now best of friends and she has continued to give me lots and lots of valuable advice! I’m very honoured to be Lady Captain in 2011 and I look forward to encouraging new and existing members to make the most of the club both in terms of playing the course and taking part in the many and varied social events the club has to offer. It is, after all, one of the most beautiful courses in the Peak District. |
