Tom James with a couple of SeniorsThe Seniors section is open to 'youngsters' over 55 years of age for an annual additional membership of just £5 per year. Seniors meet to play on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8:30am which means they're back home early enough to take their wives shopping, do the gardening, paint the living room etc etc.

The highlight of the week is without doubt the Friday morning 'fiddle', again starting at 8:30am. This fiercely competitive Stableford competition can easily draw in excess of 20 players each week - lured by the prospect of huge winnings from the £1 entry fee per person.

During the summer (April - September), friendly home and away matches are played against 13 other clubs. Normally these require a team of 8 pairs. Each of the matches ends with a meal, all for the meagre sum of £6 per head. How else can you get to play such a variety of golf courses for such a little sum?

League fixtures are played against teams from Mellor, Glossop and British Aerospace. At the end of the season the four teams with the highest scores from all the competing clubs meet in a final - last season New Mills reached the final.

Seniors in ClubhouseIn addition to these fixtures there are a number of internal competitions for the Seniors. The Marcliffe cup sponsored by Cliff Ardern is an individual Stableford played off yellow tees with a variety of different prizes on offer. The George Scott trophy held towards the end of the season is an individual Stableford played off full handicap from the yellow tees, whilst the Vets cup is also an individual Stableford held in October.

Add to this the annual 'Turkey Trot' played as a pairs competition and open to guests from other clubs, a couple of mixed competitions with the Ladies and a Charity Competition, played as an individual medal off white tees on 3/4 handicap where the two highest scoring players go on to represent the Seniors against clubs from all over the area, and you can see how active the Seniors Section can be for those of us who have nothing better to do with our time than 'go out and play'!

Seniors Annual Dinner 2010

The Seniors Annual dinner took place on Monday, 25th January and was attended by over fifty people. Retiring Senior's Chairman, Alan Blakeman thanked everyone for their support over the last twelve months and wished the new Senior's Chairman, John Abson every success in the coming year. Mr. Captain commented on the undoubted strength of the Senior's section in the club and thanked Alan for all his hard work in organising fixtures and for also arranging some very popular and successful social events throughout the year.

The evening ended with Alan and two musician friends, Ralph Smethurst and Bill Phillips entertaining us all with some traditional folk music and some hilarious monologues.

Marcliffe Cup 2010

43 of the Seniors took part in this year's Marcliffe Cup which is presented annually by Cliff Ardern. Unlike last year the weather was atrocious and not all the entrants finished the course. As one member commented the tea, home made scones jam and cream provided by Cliff at half way house were especially welcomed this year.

The winner of a very close contest was Graham Elliott with an excellent score of 36 points given the appalling conditions. Terry Johnson was just one point adrift in second place with Ged Armitt 3rd on 34 points and Graham Hawkins 4th with 33 points.

A number of other prizes were awarded by Cliff. Winners of nearest the pin on the par 3's were Dave Holt (4th), Neil Atkinson(6th) and Ray Holden (8th)

Prtizes for second shot nearest the pin on the 12th was won by John Abson and on the 17th by Fred Markham. Fittingly Graham Elliott won the prize for nearest the line on the 9th.

Congratulations to all the winners but also to those brave and hardy souls who turned out and completed the 18 holes.

Seniors Knock out Competitions 2009

Both the Seniors doubles Knock- out and the Singles knock out competitions have now been decided.

The winner of the singles title this year is Ernie Taylor who pulled off what to many was a surprise victory in the final over Ian Reeves. Ernie’s victory was extremely well deserved as along the way he took some big scalps including Mike Howard, Phil Smallman and Les Swann.

The doubles title went to Mike Richardson and Pete Christian who defeated Mike Howard and Clive Garside in the final. Congratulations to all who took part in both competitions with over 40 members entering each of the competions which ran throughout the summer from mid April until the end of September.

George Scott Trophy 2009

Superb weather and a pristine course was the perfect recipe for a great morning’s golf for the 25 Seniors who took part in this year’s George Scott Trophy which was held last Monday on September 21st. The individual Stableford comp played off full handicaps couldn’t have produced a much closer finish. Both Graham Elliott and Bernard Pickering finished on 41 points the winner being decided on the best back nine score. Graham with 18 points just pipped Bernard  who scored just one less with 17 points. It’s a cruel game at times!!! Third place with 40 points went to Pete Christian with Arnie Merrick just one point behind in fourth.10 players achieved a score of 37 points or better.

Vets Cup 2009

Conditions for the Vets cup were made extremely difficult by a very strong wind, which made club selection a problem for most competitors. The result couldn't have been closer with three players tying on 39 points and even when the best back nine scores and even the best back six holes were looked at it was still impossible to find a winner. However, eventually, based on the last three holes, Harold Ashton was declared the winner with Mike Richardson second and Dave Holt third. Well done to all those who took part.

Turkey Trot 2009

A clear, calm but very frosty day was the setting for this year's Turkey Trot played as a pairs betterball Stableford competitiion and open to players from other clubs. Played on winter greens the competition produced some very high scores and couldn't have been closer. Yours truly and my partner Fred Markham really felt we were in with a serious chance having scored 46 points! Alas we weren't even in the prize winners!

Winners with 49 points were Rod Taylor and Alec Holland whilst Harold Ashton and his brother Brian were second on 48 points beating Les Swann and Steve Price courtesy of a better back nine. Two pairs scored 47 ponts, Mike Bryant and his friend from Hazel Grove and Stan Freeman and his visitor to complete the prizewinners.
