Carl Cross, PGA Professional at New Mills Golf Club

Carl Cross, PGA ProfessionalHi I’m Carl Cross, PGA Professional at New Mills Golf Club.

I began my golfing career at 12 years old as a junior in Buxton and in 1991 became Derbyshire Boys champion during my 4th and last season as an amateur. As an amateur golfer I won over 20 competitions at junior and senior level before embarking on my career as a professional at the tender age of 16.

My first 10 years as a professional were spent at Chesterfield Golf Club firstly as junior assistant and then as senior assistant under the guidance of Professional Mike McLean. I qualified to become a full member of the PGA 1993 and at the age of 19 was the youngest ever full member.

I was appointed as Head Professional at New Mills Golf Club in January 2001. My initial responsibility was to stock the shop from scratch, this was a great time for me due to my sales experience, which will always be a passion to me. In addition to the new responsibility it provided me with a platform of opportunity to put all that I had learned together with fresh ideas of my own. At the start of 2007 I was asked by the club to take on the responsibility of Director of Golf. My first job was to fulfil the clubs potential of capturing more visiting parties and casual golfers.  Over the first twelve months, I more than double the income from this source, and by 2009 the revenue created was almost 4 times it was before I took on this responsibility, I did this by redesigning how the club sells itself along with creating a brochure and posting/emailing this to all past visiting parties, and identifying  potential new bookings.

As a professional I have won many tournament including the Midland assistants order of merit, match play and assistants’ league, twice won the Derbyshire professionals championship, the Derbyshire Match Play championship and also the Derbyshire Professionals Open Tournament.

Carl Cross lessonsDuring my 20 years as a Professional, I have built up a good reputation as an instructor of golf, both in and around the Chesterfield, Bakewell, New Mills and Buxton areas.

I have a lesson book consisting of regular pupils including:

  • Beginners
  • Juniors
  • Ladies and Gentlemen of all standards
  • Professionals
  • County Players
  • European and US Tour Players
  • Ryder cup players

Since becoming a Professional, I have enjoyed a number of Group Lessons (mostly ladies and juniors) and company days. I have also done a lot of teaching at local schools, as I believe this is a very important area in the future of golf.

Over the last few seasons I have become more involved in running corporate days, catering for all sizes of groups as well as different levels. The services I have provided for these days include Invites, competition format with card check and results, tuition, refreshments both on the course and in the clubhouse, photography, presentation’s and more.

Being a PGA Club Professional is not just about playing golf, sitting in a retail outlet or spending day after day on the range, it is about communicating with each person that requires my professional services as an individual. When asked what I do for a living, I reply “I make golfers happy”.
