Glorious weather for the Open WeekendThe Open Weekend was blessed with outstanding weather – clear blue skies and lots of warm sunshine although the strong wind on Saturday made playing conditions more difficult than on Sunday.
The Quad Am on Saturday was extremely well supported and was a very close affair with Junior captain Sam Shaw, Steve Price and Dave Bray finishing first with 85 points. One point behind, in second place was the team comprising Mr. Captain, Mike Wilson, John Read and Jon Swindells whilst 3rd place went to Gez Moran, Pat Walker, Clive Garside and another of our up and coming juniors, Jack Marshall.
As Steve Price said “I spent all my working life teaching 16 year olds but on Saturday Sam Shaw turned the tables and taught me a thing or two about playing golf!” Sam, who plays off 8, is fast developing into a very talented and promising golfer. Most of us can only stand back and watch in awe. And to think he’s only been playing the game seriously for three years!!!!
Sunday was much the better day, weather wise and conditions for playing golf were perfect for the pairs, Betterball Stableford. No excuses this time about the effect of the wind, or not knowing which club to select. Plus the greens were in perfect condition.
The early evening’s entertainment was provided by a welcome return of the ever popular Bollington Brass Band led by their conductor and one of our club members Pete Christian.
Once again the concert was first class. They have a great repertoire ranging from very traditional brass band numbers right through Leornard Berstein numbers and swing.
What better way to spend a lovely summer’s evening than sitting outside listening to a set of truly talented musicians.
The bar-b-que put on by Peter and Pat was the final finishing touch to a tremendous weekend. |

Saturday evening was rounded off by a disco and bar-b-que.
For me the highlights were Debbie’s beautiful trombone solo ‘Why Did I Choose You’. The great swing number Mumbo Jumbo and Martin Davies’ superb cornet solos. Mind you the finale with the band being accompanied with their rendition of ‘Hello Dolly’ by the ‘choir’ of new Mills Golf Club families and friends took some beating!
