Ladies weekend away at Herons Reach, Blackpool - April 2011

Written by Lady Captain (Marion Harrison)

On Friday 15th April 2011, New Mills Golf Club Ladies headed off to the De Vere Hotel, Herons Reach, now called the Village Herons Reach, Blackpool, for their annual soiree golf weekend. The venue was very modern with lovely comfortable rooms, excellent facilities, active and lively, with lots of different social events taking place. The weather was first class (Costa del Sol type). The restaurant was a new American Italian venture called BUCA di BEPPO, where each table shared the meal. Twenty-two ladies sat down to Friday night’s dinner, on three tables in a cosy section of this well displayed restaurant and each table shared three courses: starters, main course of pizzas and pastas and desserts - however, a little too heavy on the carbs, but after a discussion with the head waiter, Saturday night’s dinner proved to be a little more traditional and enjoyable.

There was one or two sore heads on the Saturday morning, (the morning after the night before touch), but everyone was on time to tee off for the Quad Am at 10:29am with 2 best scores to count and was won by Judith Johnson, Christine Currie, Pam Boffey and Lady Captain, Marion Harrison, and this was topped off by a hoe in one by Christine Currie on the 4th. Has it gone in, or not? We couldn’t wait to get to the green to find out. YES! Brilliant!

Drinks with the Lady CaptainChristine Currie had made invitations for Lady Captain, inviting everyone to her room on Saturday evening at 6:30pm for drinks and nibbles, and three lady members, namely, Helen Harrison, Jackie Piper and Janet Bowers had organised decorating her room for the evening, with balloons and streamers and the gin and wine were drunk dry whilst watching the football match where the Blues beat the Reds 1-0 giving a very enjoyable atmosphere, before going down to dinner at 7.45pm. After dinner we all went down into the bar where a sing-a-long developed with a good rendition of “Hello Dolly” from Joyce Hadfield and we all joined in other songs by Kate Bromilow, Mo Harrison and Jean Taylor; a rousing end to the day.

Sunday morning dawned, bright and clear and by 8 o’clock, the fairways were ablaze with sunshine, not a cloud to be seen, and today would be an individual Stableford and we duly teed off at 10.05am. You could say it was a perfect day for golf but would the scores reflect this? YES. The first prize was won by Christine Currie with 31 points, the second was a draw with 29 points by Judith Johnson and Mo Harrison, and had to be decided by the back 6 score; Judith was 2nd and Mo was 3rd. Nearest the pin was won by Brenda Wheeldon and the longest drive was won by Jean Taylor. When all the scores were in, and the cards checked by Brenda Wheeldon we congregated on the lower terrace for well-earned refreshments and the presentation of prizes.

I have to congratulate Christine Currie, who on her first weekend away achieved a hole in one on the first day. Obviously the lesson with Carl, our professional helped, and I’m sure she has had a weekend to remember for a long time.

Weekend Away 2012, being organised by Janet Bowers

The next Ladies Weekend away will be from April 20th to 22nd 2012 at Patshull Park near Telford - see http://www.patshull-park.co.uk/. The very competative price of £139 pp includes 2 nights evening meal, bed and breakfast. 2 rounds of golf and use of all the facilities including Gym, Swimming pool, steam room etc. All rooms will have golf course views. Single rooms will be available at a small supplement and buggies can be hired (cost to confirm). Patshull Park is an independant Golf & Country Club and has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. This venue has proved very popular as many of our Lady golfers have visited Patshull in the past and comes highly recommended.

Quite a few names are on the list in the entrance hall to the Ladies Locker room (along with a brochure for Patshull). A £25 deposit is required as soon as possible (Cheques Payable to Janet Bowers please), as Patshull require numbers by the end of 14 May. If the ladies can't get up to the Clubhouse over the next few days, please ring Janet Bowers (Lady Vice) on 0161 427 5280 or 07980 838 072, and she will happily add your name.
