Social Events

The end of 2010 saw a number of social events at the club all of which have been well supported by members and their friends.

Bollington Brass BandSadly the Annual Dinner dance before Christmas had to be cancelled because of the atrocious weather. However, the Christmas concert by Bollington Brass Band was able to go ahead and once again was a huge success with, according to Mr. Captain, the ‘Twelve days of Christmas’ being the highlight of the evening involving lots of audience participation and dare we say a fair bit of competitiveness! Once again Musical director, Pete Christian and his band provided a superb evening’s entertainment and got those who came along into the Christmas spirit.

The Children’s Christmas party was the last major event to be organised by retiring Steward and Stewardess Peter and Pat Chadwick and Santa and his little helpers were once again a huge success with the children. A presentation was made to Peter and Pat by House Chairman Arthur Oliver who wished them both a long and happy retirement and thanked them for all their hard work on behalf of the club over the last 10 years.

Peter and Pat Chadwick retiring

Peter and Pat Chadwick change course

After 10 years as Steward and Stewardess of New Mills Golf Club, Peter and Pat Chadwick retired in December 2010.

During their spell at the club Peter and Pat have witnessed many exciting changes. Firstly in 2001, the existing nine hole course was extended with the creation of an additional nine holes on the other side of the clubhouse. Then in 2007, the clubhouse was modernised and completely re-furbished to provide an attractive venue for members and visiting golf societies.

Peter, served in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards for 23 years, much of the time as Sergeant Major and then worked as a driver for Mini-Gears an engineering company based in New Mills. Pat worked for local firm, Swizzels, in the works canteen before moving to the golf club.

ClassicsReturn of the Classics -  November 2010

A near full house enjoyed a tremendous evening of live ‘60’s music from the’Classics’ on Wednesday evening.

There was barely room left on the dance floor as some of the clubs slightly older members relived their teens and twenties! Watch out ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ there’s some real talent out there especially the ‘young’ octogenarian in the blue checked shirt!

Quad AM Sunday September 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Quad Am Sunday September 2010

Captain's Team in Quad AMA superb event involving 43 teams for the Annual Quad Am took place on Sunday. As organiser Graham Hadfield said ‘It’s a long time since I’ve seen the carpark so full for a Quad Am. An intriguing mixture of teams took part in the competition –there ought to have been a prize for the most bizarre or cleverest team name.

The day started promising enough and the forecast by the Met office was encouraging. However, around 11am the first of several torrential downpours occurred. Not only did brollies blow inside out but one of my playing partner’s had his brolly snapped in half! However, everyone soldiered on, albeit at times having to stop playing and find whatever shelter they could and wait for the New Mills monsoon to stop. Why was it that we were on the highest part of the course when the storm was at its worst!!!!

Despite the abysmal weather, which did improve considerably in the afternoon, some excellent scores were recorded and some fine golf was played.

Captain's Day - Plus FoursCAPTAIN’S WEEKEND: August 2010

Despite some less than promising weather on Saturday –drizzle turning to quite persistent rain and then finally improving for the late starters - a great time was had by all the 125 male members which included Juniors and five day members. Some fantastic scores  were recorded and as you can see from the photograph, members really got into the spirit of the day!

The format on Saturday was an individual Stableford off a three quarter handicap  which combined with some challenging pin positions made the winning scores  even more impressive. The winner, after a countback, was Jim Wharmby with 41 points, second was Chris Wood with Trevor Higginbottom a close third with 39 points, also after a back nine countback.
